L'Opera - a mix in three acts

Opera is an art form in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work (called an opera) which combines a text (called a libretto) and a musical score. Opera incorporates many of the elements of spoken theatre, such as acting, scenery and costumes and sometimes includes dance.

Some operas begin with an overture or prelude (A Question of Honor, La Dolce Vita), which sometimes establishes the place and time in which the opera takes place, and may contain musical themes that get repeated throughout the performance.

Act 1 introduces our main characters. Often they will be in the midst of a conversation, with one character proclaiming her motivations for her actions later in the opera (Drowned World/Substitute for Love). Then her lover will respond (I'm Not in Love) often ironically, and the conversation continues (Martyr). A third or fourth character will then appear, often this person will be the antagonist, a villain, someone who pretends to be a friend but is really there to plant seeds of doubt (Tubular Bells/Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls), all the while claiming everything to be alright (Things Can Only Get Better).

Act 2 will find our heroine alone, but obsessing about her beloved (I'm in Love) who has been called away, most likely by someone working for the villain. The villain will continue to confuse things, tell our heroine that the man she loves has been away so long he's probably forgotten about her, perhaps going as far as to send a collaborator to the hero, to seduce him (My Name is Barbarella) and whisper lies into his ear, causing him to doubt his lover (In the Air Tonight)... Our heroine will hear rumors of the seduction, she will bemoan this apparent betrayal of her trust, and this will be the signature aria of the opera (This Love).

Act 3 might begin with the villain bragging about the trouble he has caused (Furioso). Invariably, the hero will return home in time to overhear the villain and the two will argue (Hymn) before resorting to violence (Duel of the Fates). With the villain defeated, our hero races home (Waves), only to find that she hasn't waited, a tragedy has befallen her (Gravity of Love) and the opera ends.

A reprise of the Overture wraps things up (A Question of Honor).
